The industrial areas managed by the Consortium overlook the Gulf of Cagliari in southern Sardinia, a location in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, on the main shipping routes between the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar and close to the Middle East. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The industrial area of Cagliari boasts excellent connections and transport links: the Cagliari-Elmas airport and the International Container Terminal at the industrial port ensure fast and efficient connections with the main international freight and passenger routes; travel between the industrial area and the rest of the island is facilitated by its proximity to the main roads.<\/p>\n

The area enjoys a pleasant, typically Mediterranean, climate (average annual temperature 16.4 \u00b0C), with long, hot summers (average temperature in July 25.2 \u00b0C, mitigated by breezes coming from the north-east and west) and very mild winters (average temperature in January 9.5 \u00b0C).<\/p>\n

Sardinia is not just a holiday destination, but above all an ideal place to live and work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

Environmental and historical context<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

The industrial areas managed by the Consortium are nestled in an important nature area.<\/p>\n

Elmas to the east and Macchiareddu and Sarroch to the west overlook the Cagliari lagoon, also known as the Santa Gilla lagoon, one of the most important wetlands in Europe<\/strong> in terms of size and biodiversity. The wetland has both brackish and freshwater areas and is home to rich bird life including pink flamingos, cormorants, ducks, herons and stilt birds.<\/p>\n

The Santa Gilla lagoon is protected by the international Ramsar Convention on wetlands and in 1976 was<\/strong> named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

The area, which was used as a port as early as the Punic period, is rich in history. Worth noting is the industrial archaeology site of the Conti Vecchi Salt Pans, located within still active saltworks, which tells the story of the salt production process with a museum and an educational trail that covers natural pools, salt heaps and wildlife. The site has been granted under a concession to the company Ing. Luigi Conti Vecchi SpA (ENI\/ENI REWIND group) and is supported by FAI (the Italian Environmental Fund).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

Our goal is to prove that industrial development is compatible with protection of the environment, and can indeed be one of its main mainstays.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>
